本名Ryland Peter Cooder，出生洛杉磯的Ry Cooder，60年代開始一腳踏入音樂產業，1965年和Taj Mahal、Spirit和鼓手Ed Cassidy合組Rising Sons樂團，但這個原本前途被大為看好的團體卻因專輯被取消發行而解散。
1972年發表個人突破性大碟“Into the Purple Valley”，在傳統領域中企圖和多元風格併發出前所未有之可能性音場，讓Ry的實驗手法贏得一片讚賞，滾石雜誌+AMG等媒體全送上極高評價！進入90年代的Ry更是意氣風發，替“Buena Vista Social Club樂士浮生錄”擔任電影音樂製作，不僅入籍滾石雜誌『史上500張最佳專輯』、獲AMG滿分推崇，並在美國大破百萬銷售，佔據告示牌潛力榜+拉丁榜+世界音樂榜+熱帶專輯榜冠軍位置，更抱回葛萊美『最佳傳統熱帶拉丁專輯』大獎加冕！
