摘自 開眼電影 網站 : 導演柏納多貝托路奇因為本片獲得奧斯卡最佳導演獎，共獲奧斯卡九項大獎，華裔女星陳沖、尊龍主演，敘述中國最後一位皇帝溥儀傳奇、無奈的一生。
1950年冬，溥儀從蘇聯被押回中國，在車上，溥儀從回憶中驚醒過來，他也被管理所長救起，從此開始囚徒生活。在獄中，他遇見了胞弟溥傑，回憶起40年前的往事。溥儀6歲時，辛亥革命的成功使他成為－紫禁城裡的皇上。
1919年，溥儀開始接受西方文化的熏陶，他的生活方式發生了劇變，並且開始朦朧地嚮往西方的民主政治。盡管他在1922年娶了婉容為“皇后”、文繡為“皇妃”，他的心卻早已飛向了英國，飛向了牛津大學。
1924年，馮玉祥的部下將溥儀逐出了紫禁城。在1934年，日本侵吞了東北三省後，溥儀不顧婉容和其他人的勸阻，去長春登上了“滿洲國皇帝”寶座。 婉容自甘墮落，吸上了鴉片，和溥儀的距離越來越遠。當她和司機的姦情敗露，私生的孩子被燒死後，她精神失常，被日本人送走了。溥儀直到1945年8月日本無條件投降，“滿洲國”解體，溥儀出逃未遂在長春機場被蘇軍俘虜，才結束了“皇帝”生涯。
後來，“史無前例”的文化大革命已經開始，生活中的一切秩序都已經打亂顛倒。溥儀在騎自行車回家的途中，遇見了被作為皇帝的走狗押著遊街的戰犯管理所所長。被攪糊塗的溥儀來到故宮博物館，這裡已沒有遊人。他獨自登上了太和殿，告訴在那裡守衛皇帝座位的兒童紅衛兵說“我是中國的皇帝”。為了證明這一點﹐他從寶座墊下掐出了50年前放在那裡的蟈蟈籠子，紅衛兵讓他在寶座上又坐了一次。在紅紅的夕照下，一隻蟈蟈從籠子裡爬了出來。
又一個夏天，一個導遊在太和殿前向來自各國的遊客們高聲介紹﹕“這是太和殿，中國最後一個皇帝愛新覺羅．溥儀在這里登基。那時他才3歲。1967年，他在北京逝世……”。
