指揮家與小提琴家，1930年3月6日出生於法國諾埃里（Neuilly）的美國家庭，隨後舉家遷回匹茲堡。馬捷爾是個少年天才，幼年時期就會拉小提琴，9歲正式登上指揮台。托斯卡尼尼在1941年還曾邀請他指揮NBC交響樂團。馬捷爾15歲進入匹茲堡大學學習哲學和語文時，同時也在匹茲堡交響樂團擔任小提琴手。
50年代開始，馬捷爾在義大利、德國等地指揮廣播交響樂團。1960年成為第一位站上拜魯特音樂節指揮家的美籍指揮。1964年到1972年擔任柏林廣播交響樂團（今柏林德意志交響樂團）與柏林德意志歌劇院音樂總監；1951年到1982年出任克里夫蘭管弦樂團音樂總監；1982年到1984年接掌維也納國立歌劇院音樂總監。1998年到1996年就任匹茲堡交響樂團藝術總監。（文/ 陳效真）
