1894年，瑪莎‧葛蘭姆(Martha Graham)出生於美國賓夕法尼亞州的阿萊格漢尼(Allegheny)，她是美國舞蹈家，編舞者及教師，更是世界著名現代舞的領導典範。她的父親是一位出色的精神病分析學家及虔誠的教徒。瑪莎很早就在她父親的教誨中體會到「動作是不會撒謊的」，這也是她明瞭到一個人的所有行為都和內心想法與情感息息相關。
瑪莎所建立的舞蹈技巧是以呼吸為原動力，吸氣時身體直而外揚，吐氣時腹部收縮內省，以脊椎為中軸線，讓身體做螺旋式的向上旋轉，有著三度空間的立體變化。瑪莎的創作過程通常是由她稱為的「某些感動」開始：有些靈感來自古希臘羅馬神話、美國歷史、聖經故事、歷史人物、原始儀式，或是當時的社會問題、禪宗、心理分析、詩句、畫作等。她創造一個情境或角色，讓這些情感和內容藉由扭曲的身體來表達出掙扎、悲働與狂喜，其所創造出的身體語彙涵義更加明確與深刻。
瑪莎在她的自傳「血的記憶」中第一句話就提到說：「我是一名舞者。」她認為自己是被上天選為一名舞者。也因為她如此熱愛舞蹈，所以舞至七十六歲高齡。退休後的瑪莎臥病纏身，過程中她曾孤獨和絕望，人們以為她將一蹶不振，沒想到她三年後再次重生，重組舞團，繼續編舞，同時繼續巡迴全球演出，直到九十七歲去世。
瑪莎在全世界現代舞壇的地位無可取代，對台灣舞蹈圈的影響甚大。自游好彥、林懷民先後將葛蘭姆技巧帶回台灣開始至今，瑪莎技巧在台灣的舞蹈教育便漸成為屹立不搖的主流訓練。奠定在此基礎之上，台灣舞者許芳宜更在一九九五年加入瑪莎葛蘭姆舞團，並於一九九九年成為瑪莎葛蘭姆舞團的首席，被媒體譽為「瑪莎‧葛蘭姆傳人」。
面對這樣的榮耀，許芳宜選擇了自省與思考：「什麼叫『傳人』？是和葛蘭姆做得一模一樣嗎？還是讓她的作品注入新的生命，可以繼續燃燒？」許芳宜坦承自己面對葛蘭姆作品時，對其歷史背景雖有涉獵，但仍感遙遠。不過，她用自己所理解的震撼和感動來感受作品，體會葛蘭姆所捕捉的人性共通點：脆弱、忌妒、孤獨、慾望… …。
在後現代主義大行其道的今天，葛蘭姆經典的再現仍感動著人們：在荊棘遍佈的現代舞開創路途上，葛蘭姆的決心使她得以破繭而出，跳出直指人心的舞蹈；也讓百年後的觀眾仍能藉由她的作品，穿透自己的內在。
