「原子博士」是美國當代作曲家約翰．亞當斯(John Adams)所創作的歌劇，由彼得．席拉(Peter Sellars)填詞，劇情描述首批原子彈製造的科學家，也是著名「曼哈頓計劃」中的核心人物J. Robert Oppenheimer所面臨的巨大壓力與緊張氣氛，2005年於舊金山歌劇院首演。這齣戲的風格就如同亞當斯之前的作品「尼克森在中國」以及「克林霍弗之死」一樣，取材都是探討近代重大歷史事件中關鍵人物的人格與個性，更甚於僅僅只是重現事件本身。約翰．亞當斯是當代最重要的作曲家之一，也是極簡主義的代表性人物之一，作品帶有浪漫主義與極簡主義的風格，他的歌劇「尼克森在中國」是二十世紀最著名的歌劇之一。
大都會歌劇院在2008年重新製作此歌劇時，請來Pennt Woolcock執導、Alan Gilbert指揮，演出前規劃一系列的講座與座談會，並成為「大都會歌劇院現場HD系列」之一，有全國性的電視轉播，後來更在週六下午有實況的電台轉播。此DVD錄製的時間即是2008年10月。值得一提的是劇中男主角J. Robert Oppenheimer由男中音杰拉德．芬利(Gerald Finley)擔綱演出，從首演至今，杰拉德．芬利在這個角色上傑出的表現讓他獲得不少掌聲，也成為不二人選，DVD幕後花絮特別訪談了這位男中音以及作曲家約翰．亞當斯。
