The 1862 version of Verdi's opera was written on commission from the Imperial Theatre of St. Perersburg, and ends with the death of all three principal characters, rather than offering the religious consolation of the more familiar revised version. This production by Elijah Moshinsky uses reconstructions of backcloths from that 1862 premiere, as well as new costumes by Peter J. Hall.
