巴赫一共譜有兩部神劇，這部《聖誕節神劇》創作於1734年，一共由六部清唱劇組成，分成六天在聖誕節三天、元旦、元旦後的禮拜日，及主顯節上演唱。巴赫本人把這部作品稱為「基督誕生時節的神劇」，以對應於福音耶穌受難故事所寫成的「受難曲」，神劇則是以聖經的耶穌誕生記為主軸。《聖誕節神劇》的音樂充滿安詳的抒情風格，與歌詞之間保持極為妥適的平衡關係。
