Composed in 1723, Antonio Vivaldi's The Four Seasons is among the most recognized and beloved works of classical music. Although its melodies are familiar, not every listener knows about the poetic word imagery Vivaldi created to accompany his four violin concertos. This entertaining and educational program helps viewers fully experience the details and nuances of the Baroque masterpiece. Before a live audience, conductor-host George Marriner Maull, violin soloist Peter Winograd, and the members of the Discovery Orchestra reveal the descriptive sonnets Vivaldi wrote into his score. After an interactive exploration of each concerto aided by a user-friendly listening guide, the orchestra performs the piece in its entirety, providing the opportunity for a focused and rewarding musical experience. Additional segments shed light on fascinating connections between music, birdsong, and the human brain.
