本片是根據轟動一時的百老匯舞台劇改編。
時空背景是在1950年的紐約，百老匯大亨麥克斯曾經呼風喚雨，現在卻慘遭滑鐵盧，每部戲都門可羅雀，被迫早早下檔。在龐大的財務壓力下，詭計多端的會計師心生一計，打算尋找充滿熱情但專門推出爛片的製作人，先替他們募集大量的資金，然後當戲不受觀眾歡迎時，在不平等條約的規範下，所有的資金就將被戲院飽入私囊。
而第一部掉入圈套的“大爛片”，是由叛逃的納粹黨員編劇的【希特勒也有春天】，歹戲即將上映，一場真正的好戲才正要開始…
摘要註
Max Bialystock was once the king of Broadway, but now he only seems to be able to produce flops. Things turn around for Max when he's visited by the neurotic accountant Leo Bloom, who proposes a scheme tailor-made for producers who can only make flops: raise far more money than you need, then make sure the show is despised. No one will be interested in it, so you can pocket the surplus. With this in mind, they decide to produce a musical called 'Springtime for Hitler' written by escaped Nazi Franz Liebken. Then they get the insanely flamboyant Roger De Bris to direct and hire the loopy Swedish bombsheel Ulla as the lead actress.
