超過七十年歷史的維也納新年音樂會，從1939年發聲於金色大廳、1959年開始電視轉播、1979年起發行影音商品，這已是最重要、也最受歡迎的年度音樂盛事。如今有超過九十個國家、五千多萬觀眾同步收看，CD與DVD亦成樂迷競相收藏的珍品，維也納新年音樂會吸引人之處，在於品味卓越的不同年度指揮家、堅守正統的維也納愛樂，更有那些宛如天籟的史特勞斯家族音樂。
2015年的年度指揮家，維也納愛樂邀請高齡七十九歲的指揮大師祖賓梅塔五度執棒。1936年出生於印度孟買的梅塔，與維也納愛樂有著超過半世紀的深厚淵源，他十八歲來到維也納音樂學院求學，1961年，二十五歲的梅塔即以最年輕的記錄首次指揮維也納愛樂。曾經率維也納愛樂來台的他，兩者之間有著密不可分的長久默契，因此前輩指揮巨匠貝姆將代表維也納愛樂最高榮耀的「尼金許指環」傳承給梅塔，2001年樂團更授封他為榮譽指揮。
梅塔1990年首次擔任維也納新年音樂會指揮，之後1995、1998、2007、至今2015年合計五次，成為當今在世大師中，擔任年度指揮家最多的一位。闊別八年，梅塔開出的二十首新年樂曲，除了以蘇佩的《維也納的早中晚》序曲作為開場、和下半場倫拜的《香檳》加洛波舞曲之外，全都是史特勞斯家族的音樂，象徵對百年前維也納「美好時代」致敬的意涵。而這一年也是史特勞斯家族最年幼的愛德華一百八十歲誕辰，因此挑選《我們的歡笑與生活》快速波卡、《蒸汽》與《雅緻》快速波卡三首獻給樂迷。
今年同時也是維也納大學建校六百五十年暨維也納科技大學建校兩百年的特殊年份，因此梅塔匠心獨運，在下半場開場挑選連續四首關於十九世紀末歌頌新科技的樂曲，包括著名的《無窮動》、《加速》圓舞曲、《電磁》波卡與《蒸汽》快速波卡，更為年輕世代獻上《大學生》法蘭西波卡。而在今年也有五首全新曲目出現於新年音樂會，包括老約翰的《自由》進行曲和小約翰的《易北河畔》圓舞曲等。祖賓梅塔幽默、熱情又優雅的詮釋風格，與維也納新年音樂會的節慶氛圍有著巧妙連結，而回歸經典的曲目安排，更讓這場年度盛會更顯光彩，一年之計在於此，別讓新年不開心。
