1968年，當安德烈洛依韋伯與提姆萊斯還在求學時期，受委託為倫敦一所學校創作適合兒童觀賞的清唱劇，於是他們選擇了提姆萊斯最愛的聖經故事Joseph。1973年，由Gary Bond擔任主角的加長版本在倫敦的Albery Theatre上演，從此這部作品不斷在英國各地被搬上舞台，成為許多學校的最愛年度大戲。
1991年，兩人再度將它擴充成長達兩個小時的版本，在倫敦重新推出，由當紅偶像歌手Jason Donovan/傑森唐納文演出男主角，韋伯更首度擔任製作人。劇情描述以色列人祖先雅各的十二個兒子之中，小老婆生的約瑟夫聰明伶俐又會解夢，最得父親寵愛，父親特別為他買了一件色彩鮮豔的昂貴外衣，引起了兄長們的妒嫉，把他騙到荒郊野外，被奴隸販子賣到埃及富商家中為奴，還好他憑著智慧化解種種困境，最後竟然成為法老王的宰相。戲中主題曲“Any Dream Will Do”奪得英國金榜的冠軍，甚至還被英國的同性戀者改為“Any Queen Will Do”。
這齣戲的音樂風格極為多樣化，從美國歌謠、鄉村歌曲、埃及民俗音樂到古老的法國歌謠、甚至還把貓王的造型和曲風也搬上了台面，令人不得不佩服兩人的才華。
