In Part I (22 min.) scenes from Plautus' Amphitryon and Shakespeare's A comedy of Errors are compared to show how Roman comedy inspired Shakespeare and later playwrights. Part II (24 min.) uses scenes from Terence's Phormio, juxtaposed with scenes from Moliere's Scapin, to show Terence's influence on later playwrights and to show how each play reflects the society in which it was written. In both tapes, the use of authentic oversized masks demonstrates the exaggerated gestures and vocal techniques that were part of this ancient form of theater. 1.
