在那個意欲被抑鬱的年代，柴可夫斯基不得不成為「悲愴大師」，他的情感和私密，只能宣洩在他所譜寫的瑰麗旋律之間。即使柴可夫斯基過世已超過一百二十年，但他的同志身分在俄國仍是忌諱。然而這部《柴可夫斯基秘密檔案—作曲家的真誠告白》，將柴可夫斯基從過去拉到現代比較友善的環境，他將會是怎樣過生活？他又會譜寫出什麼音樂？
出生於德國布蘭登堡的導演普雷格（Ralf Pleger），在柏林和米蘭攻讀音樂學及藝術史，是當代極富盛名的音樂電影導演。早年拍攝過柏林愛樂與小提琴女神慕特的紀錄片，還有2012年為美國著名次女高音狄杜娜朵執導的《戲劇女王》，德國「玩美女郎」沙龍樂團也是因為他拍攝的一支演出短片而迅速走紅。此外，普雷格最近即將推出「走音天后」的傳記影片，由狄杜娜朵飾演傳奇歌手佛斯特-詹金絲，與梅莉史翠普一比高下。
近年來普雷格致力探索偉大作曲家的音樂電影，從腳本撰寫到電影拍攝，將真實文獻與虛構情節交融於影片中，建構前人未曾注意到音樂和作曲家個人之間的關連。2013年推出《貝多芬秘密檔案》與《華格納秘密檔案》，後者贏得了蒙特婁世界電影節觀眾票選首獎，更入圍了艾美獎，「作曲家秘密檔案」已成為普雷格最吸引人的系列電影。
2015問世的這部《柴可夫斯基秘密檔案》，請到德國名演員瓊斯頓（Dirk Johnston）飾演柴可夫斯基的愛人，在實境拍攝與《天鵝湖》等演出片段之外，也穿插訪談了許多重要的藝術家與學者，包括芭蕾巨星馬拉可夫（Vladimir Malakhov）、美國大膽前衛的管風琴家卡本特（Cameron Carpenter），也訪問牛津大學俄國音樂與文學教授布洛克（Philip Bullock）及專研柴可夫斯基的學者葛隆可（Kadja Grönke），以不同面相來勾勒柴可夫斯基，帶領我們走進大師最真誠的世界。
