1947創立的柏林德意志交響樂團，歷經弗利克賽（Ferenc Fricsay）、馬捷爾（Lorin Maazel）、阿胥肯納吉（Vladimir Ashkenazy）、夏伊（Riccardo Chailly）、長野健（Kent Nagano ，或譯肯特中野）、Ingo Metzmacher等指揮的訓練與薰陶，成為音樂評價不遜於柏林愛樂的著名樂團。現任指揮則為杜剛．索基夫（Tugan Sokhiev, 1977 - ）。
索基夫在2009年首度與柏林愛樂及維也納愛樂管弦樂團合作之後，獲得了「奇蹟指揮」（Dirigentenwunderwaffe）的美稱。1977年生於南奧塞提亞（Ossetia），畢業於聖彼得堡音樂院（Saint Petersburg Conservatory），2003年接任國立威爾斯歌劇院（Welsh National Opera）的音樂總監一職。隔年，法國南方的圖盧茲國家管絃樂團（Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse）邀請他擔任樂團的首席客座指揮，並於一系列成功的演出後於2008年任命他為樂團的音樂總監。
2012年索基夫接任柏林德意志交響樂團常任指揮一職。但他在2014年又接下波修瓦劇院音樂總監職位，工作量龐大，因此決定於2016年卸下德意志交響樂團的指揮與音樂總監職務。這張專輯是他任內最後發行的一張專輯，因此對於樂團而言，相當具有紀念意義。
