Returning home from the Trojan Wars during a storm, Idomeneo, the king of Crete, vows to sacrifice to Neptune in return for his own safety the first living creature he meets ashore. This turns out to be his own son Idamante and Idomeneo attempts to escape from fulfilling his vow. 根據希臘的傳說, 敘述特洛伊戰爭後的克里特島上, 被捕的特洛伊王之女伊麗亞和世仇克里特王之子及阿果斯王之女三人之間的愛情. 當戰勝的克里特王要把兒子當貢品獻給海神時, 因伊麗亞的愛情而獲釋, 且有情人終結為連理.
