因為Andrew Lloyd Webber的個人影響力、以及當時百老匯的沒落，【艾薇塔】於1978年在倫敦的Prince Edward Theatre首演，開始奠定英國倫敦在全球音樂劇界重要的領導地位；不僅創下連續演出8年2900場的紀錄，次年它登上百老匯劇院的舞台，同樣大為轟 動，演出了1568個場次。
這齣音樂劇將1940年代阿根廷第一夫人Eva Peron戲劇化而短暫的一生搬上舞台，她是曾任三屆阿根廷總統的Juan Peron的第二任妻子，充滿了政治野心；出身貧賤，但憑恃結交權貴迅速在演藝界扶搖直上，藉此一步步地踏入政治界，幫助丈夫Peron當上了阿根廷總 統，也為自己將來的執政鋪路，然而她始終沒有真正當上總統；1952年，癌症結束了她33年的光輝生命。
