蕭士塔高維契為二十世紀最偉大的作曲家之一，一生之浮沉及音樂創作與蘇聯共產政權有著極大的關係，而他的交響曲更被視為是他生命軌跡的最佳紀錄。這套專輯還特別收錄了一段1941年列寧格勒被圍城時蕭士塔高維契的談話，以作為佐證。透過廣播宣揚他正在創作的第7號交響曲「列寧格勒」，並提醒俄國聽眾音樂藝術正遭逢危機，希望所有音樂工作者都能無私地為祖國奉獻。
在過去的二十年中，阿胥肯納吉投入大量的心力於蕭士塔高維契作品的研究，包括了他的鋼琴作品，不久前錄製的《24首前奏曲＆賦格》便獲得多項國際大獎的肯定。自1987年首度嘗試第5號交響曲的錄音工作，陸續完成的許多錄音都獲得企鵝唱片評鑑的佳評，直至近期大師才完成全部十五首交響曲的錄製工作。2003年，大師帶領愛樂管弦樂團來台演出時，也曾安排蕭士塔高維契的第10號交響曲。
本輯中的第4、14號交響曲便是2006年完成的新錄音，而第4、13、14號則是首度出版，合作的樂團則為NHK交響樂團。以往的錄音大都是與英國的皇家愛樂合作，少數作品與聖彼得堡愛樂合作（第7 & 11號交響曲）。
企鵝評鑑認為本輯中的第5號交響曲是此曲眾多版本中最佳的詮釋，並給予三顆星的評價，其豐沛的音響及錄音品質已達示範級水準。其餘的錄音，企鵝唱片評鑑也都給予佳評。
