Charles Lloyd (1938~) 來自美國曼非斯，這座城市的音樂活動相當豐富，於是他 9 歲便開始吹奏薩克斯風，並向鋼琴師 Phineas Newborn 習琴，當時他的一位好友便是小號手 Booker Little.
後來他在一些藍調樂團 (例如 B. B. King， Howlin' Wolf， Bobby "Blue" Bland) 裡當伴奏， 1956 年 Charles Lloyd 搬到洛杉磯，並在南加大取得音樂學位，洛杉磯的音樂家更是不勝枚舉， Buddy Collette， Ornette Coleman， Eric Dolphy， Don Cherry， Charlie Haden， Billy Higgins 都在此發跡.這段期間 Charles Lloyd 也在 Gerald Wilson 的大樂團裡演奏.
1960-1963 年 Charles Lloyd 加入鼓手 Chico Hamilton 的樂團並為該團譜曲，在他任內，這個樂團最為人道的就是他們演奏 chamber jazz (室內派爵士) 這種曲風，隨後 Charles Lloyd 又投入編制更長的 post-bop (後咆勃)，與他搭配的主要樂手是爵士吉他手 Gabor Szabo.
1964 年 Charles Lloyd 離開 Chico Hamilton 的樂團，與中音薩克斯風手 Cannonball Adderley 一起表演，這段期間他在哥倫比亞唱片旗下發行 2 張專輯 Discovery! The Charles Lloyd Quartet 及 Of Course， Of Course.
Discovery! The Charles Lloyd Quartet 是 Charles Lloyd 的首張專輯，於 1964 年 5 月發行，當時他也是 Cannonball Adderley Sextet 的成員，在專輯中 Lloyd 一人負責次中音薩克斯風與橫笛，這張唱片收錄許多 Charles Lloyd 的經典歌曲，包括 Little Piece (特別獻給 Booker Little)， Days of Wine and Roses， Sweet Georgia Bright，與 Forest Flower 的完整版.從專輯中不但能了解 Charles Lloyd 受到 John Coltrane 的影響之深，同時他的橫笛技巧也達到獨樹一格的特色，相對於日後在 ECM 的表現，這張專輯則顯示出更深遠的意義.
1966 年 Charles Lloyd 組了一個爵士四重奏樂團，其他成員有鋼琴樂手 Keith Jarrett，貝斯手 Cecil McBee，鼓手 Jack DeJohnette，製作人 George Avakian 將他們簽到 Atlantic 唱片公司旗下，這個四重奏的音樂十分有趣，他們的樂風包含了 post-bop， free jazz 和 soul jazz，且立刻吸引當下爵士樂迷跟樂評家的注意，令人訝異的是，他們還吸引了不少搖滾樂迷，使他們得到在舊金山搖滾重鎮 Fillmore 的演出機會.
而同年發行的專輯 Forest Flower 一發行立即廣受好評，成為他們在 Atlantic 唱片公司期間銷售最好的專輯，其他不錯的專輯還有 Dream Weaver 和 Love In.
1968 年樂團解散， Charles Lloyd 進入半退休狀態，儘管他在 70 年代也錄了幾張專輯，偶而也出來伴奏一下，嚴格說來，他幾乎在整個 70 年代的爵士樂圈裡消失了，一直到了 80 年代遇到鋼琴手 Michel Petrucciani 後，他才再度活耀了起來.
自 1989 年起， Lloyd 便加入 ECM，參與錄音和巡迴，雖然他的表演與 60 年代比較起來並無太多差異，由他的旋律和創作中釋放出纖細敏感的氛圍，彷彿就像是一位芭蕾舞者，這些專輯均獲得很高的評價，即使已年近 70，他依然活躍在爵士樂界，風采不減當年 !
