酷派爵士與咆勃樂派的重量級中音薩克斯風手Art Pepper有著起伏落差極大的人生際遇，1925年出生的他在五○年代是少數能夠脫離Charlie Parker影響而吹出自己的風格的白人中音薩克斯風手（Lee Konitz與Paul Desmond甲另兩個例外）。Art Pepper更是極少以大量錄音為生的藝人之一，在他晚年時更全力投入延伸自己中音薩克斯風情緒的旋律演奏，雖然享年僅五十七歲，但Art Pepper被公認是五○年代偉大的中音薩克斯風手之一的名聲卻長存人間。
