"Preljocaj sets the central conflict which destroys the lovers (between a dominant authority and an underclass) in an imaginary city. Liaisons between the controlling class, to which Juliet belongs, and the dispossessed, exploited underclass, of which Romeo is a member, are outlawed on pain of death.
