卡拉揚喜歡拍片的原因：「他要建紀念碑。」卡拉揚原本對音樂錄影(音樂影頻)很有保留，令他徹底改觀的是1957年訪問日本：12場音樂會都給錄影、在電視播放。「電視台告訴我，每場有1.8-2千萬的觀眾；而事實上我們只為3,000人演奏。」
1964年卡拉揚首次「為電視演奏」：他純粹想知道樂隊是要如何拍攝的，更重要的是要如何拍攝自己。實驗之後，他下令所有鏡頭都要對準他！導演Hugo Nibeling給卡拉揚拍的田園交響曲，有人讚創意佳，有人批評是喧賓奪主。當視頻拍攝完成後，卡拉揚立刻剪輯它，加上許多卡拉揚的特寫！漸漸的卡拉揚走向自己全權導播之路。
