生於法國的作曲家瓦瑞斯曾為促進美國的現代音樂作出過很大的貢
獻。他主要玫力於利用各種樂器的音質作為音樂構思的起點來創作
。「夜曲」「整體」「新世界」「赤道」「電子音詩」「電離」等
作品，經由夏和他的樂隊的出色演譯以及研究瓦瑞斯的學者周文中
的介紹，變得更有興、更吸引人。

瓦瑞斯1883年出生於巴黎，早年曾自辦管弦樂團專門演奏現代音樂，到了
晚年則嘗試利用電子儀器作曲，其作品充斥天馬行空的想像力，連名指揮
史托科夫斯基都曾公開表示讚揚。為了能夠更切合作曲家原意，夏伊特地
延請曾在瓦瑞斯晚年與他共事、如今已成為瓦瑞斯專家的周文中教授協助
，其權威性不容置疑。夏伊更獲邀於1998年薩爾茲堡音樂節演出瓦瑞斯的
作品「美國」，進一步實現他推廣瓦瑞斯所有作品的目標。
