摘自 博客來音樂館 網站 : Stephane Grappelli可以說是一位自學而成的樂手，同時也是讓小提琴在爵士樂界中得以正身的先驅樂手之一，也是目前資歷最深而活存在世的樂手。Grappelli的小提琴甜美而不膩，雖然源自傳統，但Grappelli卻不是一位劃地自限的樂手，曾經和Gary Burton、McCoy Tyner、Michel Petrucciani等現代爵士大師合作，顯示出Grappelli的新音樂並沒有太多適應上的問題。1934年，透過吉他手Django Reinhard的引薦加入法國知名爵士樂團“The Hot Club of France”，這個樂團在當時引起相當大的熱潮，並直接使得Grappelli迅速地成為法國爵士巨星。1969年，當Grappelliy第一次出現在美國的“新港爵士音樂節”上，Grappelli的完美技巧受到樂評的極力喜愛，除了爵士樂之外，1973年他與古典提琴手Yehudi Menuhin灌錄的專輯不但在商業上大有收穫，同時也讓人瞭解到Grappelli技術底子深厚的一面。 1956年四十二歲的爵士小提琴大師史提芬‧葛瑞波利在他的樂風中增加了即興演奏的比重，也因此更使得他在歐洲爵士樂界的名望推向另一高峰。 「Improvisations」專輯顧名思義為一張以即興演奏為主題的作品，四重奏的樂團編制網羅了巴黎一流的爵士菁英：負責鋼琴的莫里斯‧范德曾與查特‧貝克、巴比‧賈斯伯等好手有多次合作經驗，貝斯手皮耶‧米榭洛與鼓手Baptiste "Mac Kac" Reilles更是巴黎爵士樂界數一數二的人物。本作曲目亦為一時之選：從樂迷耳熟能詳的經典老歌"Cheek To Cheek"與"A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square"到大師蓋希文的"’S Wonderful"、"Someone To Watch Over Me"，後者鋼琴手莫里斯以大鍵琴優雅音色與史提芬的小提琴巧妙呼應，另外亦詮釋了柯爾．波特的名曲"Just One Of Those Things"，史提芬流暢的演奏與行雲流水般的旋律再次展露了即興創作面向的才華。
