摘自 博客來音樂館 網站 : 1915年出生的比莉哈樂黛，是爵士樂史上最偉大的女伶，她出身貧苦，母親生她的時候還未成年，父親則是很早就棄他們母女而去，哈樂黛的自傳「Lady Sings The Blues」書中的第一句話就說得很清楚：「爸爸跟媽媽結婚的時候還是兩個小孩，當時爸18歲，媽媽16歲，而我，已經3歲了。」 14歲就到紐約討生活，15歲的時候開始在餐廳、酒吧演唱，18歲時，歌倫比亞唱片公司的傳奇製作人約翰漢蒙John Hammond為哈樂黛錄音，哈樂黛剛出道時錄音的作品〈Your Mother’s Son-In-Law〉跟〈Riffin’ The Scotch〉這兩曲，為她獲得了一個很好的開頭，接下來幾年，她和跟鋼琴手泰迪威爾森Teddy Wilson，薩克斯風手李斯特楊Lester Young的合作，將哈樂黛極富感染力的歌聲襯托得更加迷人，成為膾炙人口的經典錄音。李斯特楊的外號「總統Prez」，據說就是哈樂黛幫他取的，李斯特楊也投桃報李，稱哈樂黛為「黛女士Lady Day」，這兩個外號，自此就傳播開來。 不像莎拉沃恩(Sarah Vaughan)有超過四個半八度的音域，哈樂黛不是那種天賦異稟的歌手；也不像隨時可以跟大樂團即興對飆的艾拉費茲傑羅(Ella Fitzgerald)，哈樂黛她幾乎完全不吟唱（scat），然而，哈樂黛卻是和前述的這兩位，並稱爵士樂三大天后，聆聽哈樂黛，往往令人動容哭泣，哈樂黛的歌聲當中，別有一種動人的力量，彷彿能夠將歌詞的情境化為真實，讓人耽溺其中而不自覺。 還有，也許比較少人注意到的，儘管哈樂黛不scat，但並不是說她不即興，哈樂黛在歌詞當中抑揚頓挫的強弱變換、節奏上的輕重跳躍以及拖曳搖擺，完全像是最好的爵士樂手在即興的感覺。也許就像哈樂黛自己說的：「唱歌的時候，我常會想，如果這一段是由路易士阿姆斯壯Louis Armstrong來演奏，他會怎麼作？」
