Originally conceived as an epic poem, Peer Gynt was rewritten into a five act play dealing with a man's search for his own identity and truth. The viewer is presented the fifth act, the return of the character to his homeland as an old man trying to justify his philosophy for conducting such a search. 根據史詩編成的五幕戲劇, 這是第五幕皮爾金探險返鄉後, 一長者試圖評斷他主導探險的思維
