出生於美國中西部的尼克在第一次大戰後來到紐約，準備投入債券交易的行業。租屋的兩旁都是豪宅，一邊的主人是蓋茲比，他每週都會舉辦豪華派對，到場賓客都是紐約名流，每每沈醉於美酒佳餚之中。另一邊則是遠房表妹黛西與她丈夫湯姆.畢坎濃的宅院。
尼克認識了黛西的摯友喬丹貝克，從喬丹口中第一次聽到了蓋茲比這個名字。黛西與湯姆的婚姻出現了裂痕，湯姆在外有情婦，湯姆甚至邀請尼克一起去見這位情婦－莫朶威爾森太太。
一天晚上，尼克接到了蓋茲比派對的請帖，欣然赴約。終於見到傳說中的主人蓋茲比，相談之下原來在戰時有過一面之緣。從談話中發現原來蓋茲比會住在這裡完全是為了黛西的緣故。於是故事幾條主線串連了起來，當中各個人物的糾葛隨著劇情發展逐漸明朗。
