1929年出生於紐約布魯克林的美國女高音貝佛莉‧席爾絲是20世紀美國最重要的女高音之一，曾經被《時代》雜誌封為「美國的歌劇女王」。18歲首度在費城的歌劇舞台上亮相，接下來的幾年裡，席爾絲以她音量雖然不大，但是極端靈活的花腔演唱能力，征服了歐美各個重要的歌劇院，並且以極為廣乏的演唱曲目聞名。
