第一次大戰後克里弗．查泰萊爵士回到瑞克比莊園，但是一切都與戰前不同了，克里弗因傷導致下半身癱瘓，忠實的妻子康妮則對他照顧的無微不至。隨著相處日久，克里弗的自卑使性情越古怪、易怒；康妮也因日復一日機械化的作息心情鬱悶。莊園裡獵場看守者梅勒斯是位粗俗的下階層僕人，但由於他的介入使查泰萊夫妻平淡的生活產生巨變…。
人之所以是萬物之靈，乃因有智慧，懂得控制情緒、抑制慾望。但如果一再壓抑，會有什麼結果？無法人道如果是個悲劇，那麼縱慾橫流是否該受到譴責？
D.H.勞倫斯二十世紀初最受爭議的作品，尤其有著兩極化評價的肯．羅素改編及執導，片中有場男女主角全裸在大雨中樹林裡奔跑的鏡頭，全裸象徵了一切束縛的解放，樹林又是康妮與梅勒斯的小天地，兩人在彼此身上找到了真的自我，或者說是自由。肯．羅素對性的描繪無論鏡頭或對白總是大膽而露骨，導致不少衛道人士的攻擊。
