比莉哈樂黛出生於費城，在馬里蘭州的巴爾地摩長大。她在自傳第一頁中就大膽承認，自己是名私生女。她小時候在妓院打雜，就是在這裡第一次聽到唱片，而認識了路易斯阿姆斯壯(Louis Armstrong)和貝西史密絲(Bessie Smith)的爵士歌唱。她的母親把她一人丟在巴爾地摩，之後才接她到紐約同住。到紐約後她還是在從事下人的工作，但對歌唱的熱愛開始在心中滋長。她開始叛逆，前去哈林區的史莫爾俱樂部試唱，然後就開始因為自己原創性的歌唱風格受到矚目，並被經紀人相中讓她在班尼古德曼(Benny Goodman)的唱片中演唱，之後就遇到萊斯特楊(Lester Young)這位心靈伴侶。兩人一生就這樣在音樂中相知相許。她登上了當時最重要的棉花俱樂部等地，卻染上毒癮。她的錄音生涯僅僅在三Ｏ和四Ｏ年代最豐盛，最後在五九年死於藥物過量。
比莉哈樂黛是位歌唱成就影響了美國爵士至今半世紀以上、未來也將是爵士史上最常被談論的歌手，同時她的私人生活，則有著勾動所有人心共鳴的特質，這中間的起起伏伏，她如何從一個酒館的女侍，開發自己那獨特卻不見得完美的歌唱才華，一步步憑著對音樂的熱愛和敏感度，不自覺地成為這樣傳奇的悲劇人物。而她之所以受人擁戴和喜愛，裡面還有著太多難以解釋的特質，這讓她成為音樂史上少數幾個特別吸引人的人物。這份錄音收錄她從一九四四到五五年的經典歌曲，把她那種哀怨帶點滄桑的歌聲，表現得非常道地。
