1901年出生於爵士樂發源地的路易斯阿姆斯壯，10多歲時便開始參與許多樂團的演出工作，而以他為主的Hot Five以及Hot Seven樂團更是爵士樂團的先驅，不但訂下了爵士搖擺樂-SWING的規範、發展出 "Scat"的獨特唱法，而Hot Five以及Hot Seven錄音久已被爵士樂史公認為最佳的經典名盤。
10多歲時便開始參與許多樂團的演出工作的路易斯阿姆斯壯，憑藉著過人的小號吹奏技巧以及個人創意的發酵﹐逐漸地有脫穎而出的趨勢。人們逐漸注意到，只要有路易斯阿姆斯壯，樂團的表演總會有些不一樣的東西，一些通俗的老舊曲目，到了路易斯阿姆斯壯手中便有如被賦予了新生命般、充滿了驚喜。再加上路易斯阿姆斯壯個人幽默討喜特質所累積的人氣，爵士樂逐漸地走向了即興獨奏樂手為重點的「明星化」階段。
