在現今的大提琴演奏家裡，羅斯托波維契可說是泰斗級的人物。當羅斯特羅波維契在2007年4月逝世時，不只是個人的生命，同時也代表一個時代完全結束。
這一張專輯錄製於1970年代，為羅斯托波維契剛抵達西方不久的錄影。舒曼與布洛赫的作品於1976年錄製於巴黎香榭麗舍劇院，舒曼一向厭惡為炫技而炫技，他只譜寫發自內心深處情感的聲音，這部大提琴協奏曲就是反映這樣的創作理念。這是一部反映出典型浪漫主義思想的作品，樂風清新、奔放又富有幽默感，而羅斯特羅波維奇把這部作品演奏得極為精美而且內省，洋溢著深厚的情感，並且以無可挑剔的技巧傳達出卓然不群的想像力。
理查‧史特勞斯創作於1897年的，描寫唐吉訶德騎士性格的《唐吉訶德》雖然是一首管弦樂曲，但是，理查‧史特勞斯以大提琴表示主角唐吉訶德，因此整體上更像是一首大提琴協奏曲。1975年與卡拉揚合作的《唐吉訶德》有極為自然的層次感與豐富的細節，音色溫暖而且豐富，賦予「唐吉訶德」這個角色鮮明的個性。
