很難想像如果當年John Coltrane的經典四重奏樂團裡沒有出現McCoy Tyner，那Coltrane的音樂會產生什麼變化？1938年出生的McCoy，甫於20歲出頭，即以天才之姿為Coltrane網羅，一同為Coltrane在60至66年創造了一支無懈可擊的四人團體，也為他自己奠定了日後爵士鋼琴大師的地位。McCoy自小即對非洲文化產生極大興趣，與其他有著尋根欲望的爵士樂手一樣，McCoy在他的音樂旅途中，不斷地將源於祖先的各種音樂元素融入自己的作品。
1998年，McCoy領導了一支拉丁樂團，將同是於自非洲的的古巴節奏徹底解放，儘管對McCoy或樂迷來說，拉丁爵士已非新鮮的玩意兒，但出自McCoy之手，那就是爵士，尤其是Coltrane的精神飄浮其中，才是我們應該仔細聆聽的。
