比莉．哈樂黛傳奇的一生大多充滿令人不堪的苦痛，但這不是她之所以如此令所有樂迷崇拜的原因，最重要的是她用獨一無二的嗓音，改變爵士樂演唱和表達的方式。
她在1956年底成功地完成所有音樂家的夢想－在卡內基廳表演，此時即使她仍深陷酒精與藥物折磨，卻還念念不忘實現心中一張與她所欣賞的年輕編曲／指揮家雷艾利斯合作『最完美』的管絃樂伴奏專輯（本輯共動用了四十多位優秀樂手），終於在哥倫比亞製作人厄文湯遜的穿針引線之下，『緞衣淑女』得以趕在1958年順利誕生。（1958年錄音）
