京劇被稱作“東方歌劇”，即因其為一種集歌唱、舞蹈、音樂、美術、文學等於一體的特殊戲劇形式，在形式上極為類似，在各自不同的文化背景中，京劇都獲得了經典性地位。中國戲曲原本就是美學的綜合藝術，能站在台上的都得是最好的角色，所有的小苗子都得經過坐科八年的焠練，透過軍事訓練般的戲校生活而獲得京劇基本功。所謂「台上一分鐘，台下十年功」，唱、唸、做、打的四功與手、眼、身、法、步的五法，無論作為生、旦、淨、丑哪一行當，都必須兼備。
本片是法國人所記錄的北京戲校的養成教育，每日早起練功，日復一日不止歇。片子可以見到毯子功、把子功、彈腿功、頂蠟燭的矮子功，甚至是幾成絕學的踩蹻功，孩子們一個一個浪裡白條的翻滾跌仆身影，雖激盪出多少的掌聲，但也是粒粒汗珠所累積出來的苦練實力。「龍套上下手，神仙老虎狗」指的就是坐科的學生，什麼活兒都能演，什麼戲都能上。幽揚的胡琴樂聲中，只見鏡頭就穿梭在戲曲舞台，戲校的各個角落，戲校孩子生活的場域、學習的情境一一呈現；台上的演出對照台下的訓練，對那些對戲曲未來充滿期待的孩子，更是令人份外感動。不但兼具趣味性和教育性。
