採用現代服飾、但加以卡通化和動畫風的人物造型處理、再加上好萊塢式的人物造型特殊化妝法（加上厚重的矽膠改變演員外觀），由約翰麥法蘭所設計舞台和服裝的這份「糖果屋」大都會製作，請來女高音弗萊明擔任主持人，介紹整份演出，並加收三段採訪，訪問技術指導喬克拉克、兩位主角夏佛和庫特、以及設計人約翰麥法蘭。
這份製作是EMI與大都會歌劇院簽定的合作發行，目前全系列共推出六齣歌劇，全部都是採用現場錄影，並以高畫質的方式收錄，以求在家中播放系統中能獲得最頂級的視聽呈現。這樣的演出，以往非要耗費一週飛往美國、並加上來回機票和住宿高達近十萬元、和事前長達半年的預先訂位不可。
這份錄影是2008年1月1日在大都會歌劇院中演出的現場，並且特別採用英語發音演唱，而不是原來的德文。同時原來指定給次女高音演唱的巫婆一角，在此製作中也改由男高音蘭格利基透過好萊塢特效化妝登場。本製作中主要的演員都是活躍在英國皇家歌劇院的英國籍老牌歌唱家，只有飾演葛麗特的夏佛是德國知名的女高音，至於指揮家則是今年才只有36歲的俄國新生代指揮家尤洛夫斯基，近年來深受英國歌劇界厚愛的他，先後出任葛蘭德博恩音樂節歌劇院、威爾斯國立歌劇院的音樂總監，之後更成為倫敦愛樂首席指揮。
