摘自 誠品線上 網站 : 「穆森斯克郡的馬克白夫人」是蕭士塔高維奇的四部歌劇之中最為人津津樂道的一部，雖然因為使用俄語創作而少有機會在西方國家上演，但是此劇的知名度卻是二十世紀歌劇中少有的。此劇在1930年代於蘇聯首度問世時，相當受到蘇聯人民的歡迎，四處都可見到此劇上演，可是因為史達林觀賞此劇時忿怒奪門而出，因此宣告了此劇在蘇聯的死亡，並連帶影響了蕭士塔高維奇之後的創作生涯。同時正在創作第四號與第五號交響曲的蕭氏，為了避免再度受到蘇聯當局的攻擊和禁演，立刻改變了創作方向，向官方輸誠，蕭氏在二十世紀音樂史上備受爭議的形象也就此確立。
此劇直到1960年代才有機會再度於蘇聯上演，但卻已經不是當年充滿對立和爭議性的原貌了，一直到1975年蕭氏過世後，1935年的原始版本才再度公開演出，從此全世界採用的都是1935年的原始版，也就是本片所採用的版本。此劇有很豐富動人的旋律，這也是為什麼此劇能在1935年頂著那麼血腥而前衛的劇情（有床戲和謀殺的場面）卻依然大受歡迎的原因。

"At first glance, the title of Shostakovich's opera seems to speak for itself: Katherina, neglected and unhappy in her marriage, commits the most heinous crime just like the Shakespearian Lady Macbeth. But Nikolai Leskovss short novel, which portrays Katherina as a monster, was only the starting point for Shostakovich to elicit understanding for an oppressed woman whose pursuit for self-determination is suppressed by society. Through combining satiric, grotesque and tragic elements in his music, Shostakovich succeeds in striking the balance between repulsion at Katherina's immoral acts and sympathy for her.
