英國「愛丁堡國際藝術節」和法國的「亞維儂藝術節」並列為全世界歷史最悠久、規模最大的國際性藝術節，而且這兩個藝術節同樣都是源起於歐洲，而且都是創立於1947年。
每年 8 月中旬英國愛丁堡會舉辦為期3星期的藝術節。這個藝術節有奧林匹亞藝術節之稱，是世界上最大規模的音樂、歌劇、芭蕾舞、戲劇的節慶。這段期間愛丁堡城內會湧進全世界各地的人潮，讓這座平時寧靜的城市頓時陷入一片興奮、熱鬧的氣氛。其中最主要的活動即是位於愛丁堡城前艾斯普拉納德廣場所舉行軍樂儀隊的表演。

Tattoo 由來
除了一般室內演出和儀式典禮伴奏外，似乎就很難看到軍樂隊的精彩演出，可是近來才知道其實還有一個少為人知的夜間軍樂操演，才是這些軍樂隊展現身手的機會。該名詞來自於十七世紀歐洲三十年戰爭期間，各國軍隊為爭奪權位而在荷比盧等低地國區域大打出手，當時官兵們每天打仗後就會散落在村落各地找酒喝，某荷蘭村莊不堪其擾便要求部隊長官派出鼓手沿著接到敲擊連續節奏以便集合士兵整隊回營房去，此一舉動稱做doe den tap toe (turn off the taps)﹝關掉酒桶拴塞-也就是要酒店老闆不再提供酒﹞，這原本只是在夜間集合士兵回營的動作後來逐漸演變成集合不對於夜間進行行進操演，並簡稱為Tattoo從荷蘭傳至歐洲各國成為各國軍隊與樂隊的操演項目之一。經過多年演變與結合民間技藝的表演，Tattoo不再侷限於純粹的軍樂操演，目前此項演出以歐洲地區為多數，尤其以蘇格蘭愛丁堡最為有名。

The Edinburgh Tattoo 2009 DVD features highlights from this year's popular 60th Castle Esplanade spectacular. Includes previously unseen footage of performers as distinctive and diverse as the She Huo cultural troupe from Edinburgh's twin city of Xi'an in China, the South Sea Island magic of Tonga's Royal Corps of Musicians, the Swiss Army's elite military orchestra - the Central Band, and one of the world's most sensational percussion groups, the Top Secret Drum Corps from Basel. Also commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Scottish poet robert Burns, while paying tribute to this years lead Service, the Royal Air Force.
