在一九四三年爵士樂界盛行一片Bebop的時候，突然出現一位風格獨特的爵士樂手，他叫瑟隆尼斯．孟克(Thelonious Monk)，因為當時的爵士樂風格傾向每一位樂手都可以用嫻熟的技巧飆快速的音群，唯獨瑟隆尼斯．孟克獨排眾議，以極少卻又可以不讓音樂斷掉的和絃帶領樂團演奏，一位著名的樂評家曾經說過：聽Monk彈琴，重點不在於聽他彈了些什麼，而在於聽他沒彈些什麼。
