霍連德是當今歌劇院界頗富盛名的管理人。1991年進入維也納國立歌劇院工作，1992年升任該院總監到2010年八月以七十五歲之齡退休為止，維也納國立歌劇院三度與他延長工作合約，讓他成為維也納國立歌劇院史上在職最久的總監。
為了感謝霍連德十九年來對於維也納國立歌劇院的貢獻，劇院特別為他舉辦一場星光熠熠的告別音樂會，參與演出的聲音名家包括：德國女高音達姆勞、法國女高音德賽、奧地利次女高音基爾希施拉格、德國次女高音瓦爾特勞德‧邁埃爾、俄裔女高音涅特列布科、波蘭男高音別恰拉、墨西哥男高音瓦爾加斯、德國低男中音夸斯托夫、美國男中音漢普森……以及老牌聲樂家，如：西班牙男高音多明哥、義大利男中音努奇……再加上阿米里亞托、貝特朗‧德‧比伊、路易西、梅塔、帕帕諾、魏瑟─莫斯特等十多位指揮家輪番上陣，演出這一場不可思議，被奧地利當地媒譽為「歌劇世界的星光天堂」的音樂會。
音樂會精選出十九年來，在霍連德主持下全新製作的歌劇。特別的是，其中有多首是由當年的原班人馬，以重現的方法演出，讓這場音樂會除了溫馨的氣氛，更增加了歷史價值。
