詮釋馬勒作品一直是伯恩斯坦音樂生涯最重要的成就之一。他最大的特點在於能夠表現出馬勒音樂中充沛的活力與熱情，使音樂達到整體的效果。這一張影片分別錄製於一1988（《悼亡兒之歌》，漢普森）、1990年（《呂特克詩歌》與《旅人之歌》，漢普森），以及1984年與女高音波普、以色列愛樂在台拉維夫錄製的《少年的魔法號角》。
《旅人之歌》創作於1883年到85年之間，當時馬勒因為追求女演員喬安娜‧李希特失意而創作出這一套由〈當我心愛的人出嫁時〉、〈清晨我走過田野〉、〈我有一把閃亮的刀〉、〈心愛的人有一雙藍睛〉四首歌曲組成的聲樂套曲。他藉著音樂表達內心的痛苦，這也是馬勒早年較為成熟的作品之一。呂克特是德國著名詩人，聲樂套曲《呂克特詩歌》是馬勒選擇呂克特的五首詩歌所譜寫的作品，是馬勒體現他人聲與交響樂交融之作。《亡兒輓歌》同樣是以呂克特的詩寫成的聯篇歌曲，呂克特的詩歌是為悼念自己的兒子早夭而寫。馬勒的作品完成四年之後，他所鍾愛的女兒瑪麗亞‧安娜也不幸早夭，因此馬勒曾經哀痛地認為自己提早為悼念女兒創作。聲樂套曲《少年的魔法號角》為馬勒1888到1898年間的作品，歌詞選自德國作家阿爾寧姆與布倫塔諾合編的德國古詩集。它從表面上看來像首歌，事實上卻是加入聲樂的交響曲，因此對於聲樂家的挑戰也很大。
雖然伯恩斯坦在速度上有些地方過於強調，有些地方過於緩慢，但是卻讓音樂的整體感更加豐富。漢普森的表現同樣出色，讓人不難明白伯恩斯坦會挑選漢普森的用意！漢普森的聲音優美而且甜蜜，非常具有表現力，咬字發音極具模範性。女高音波普的詮釋自然而不做作，表現出一種相當沉靜而且內斂的氣氛。
